Analyzing Journals

You can use the Journal Analyzer to compare up to 10 Scopus sources on a variety of parameters: total number of citations, articles published, percentage of articles not cited, and trend line.

Note: To view a Journal Analysis, you must have the latest version of Adobe® Flash® Player installed and JavaScript™ enabled in your browser. See Browser Requirements and Preferences for more information.

The Analyzer is available in both a Chart and a Data view. Each view displays the total number of citations, articles published, percentage of articles not cited, and trend line. The Chart View displays the information as a graph with each parameter on a separate tab. The Data View displays the four parameters together in one table.

Coverage Dates

The journal analyzer includes data from 1996 to the current year. When citations are calculated for a source, articles published before 1996 are not included, because complete citation information for articles published prior to 1996 is not available in Scopus.

In addition, you can view how current the coverage information is from the Calculations Last Updated date, which displays on each Journal Analyzer page.

Tip: To ensure that you have the most recent data for each source, add sources to the analyzer from the source homepage instead of from the Journal Analyzer page.

For more information about Scopus content coverage, see the Frequently Asked Questions on the Scopus InfoSite.

Total Citations Tab

On the Total Citations tab, you can compare sources by the number of times a source has been cited in a year. The citations are for the current year, but all of the articles published by the source (that are available in Scopus) are considered regardless of their year of publication.

Example: If a total of 50 articles has been published in the source over the last 5 years and 10 of those articles have been cited once in the current year, then the total number of citations for the year would be 10.

The number of citations for a source is listed on the y-axis of the graph and the publication year is listed on the x-axis.

Trend Line Tab

On the Trend Line tab, you can compare sources by the average number of times a publication is cited in a year. The citation trend of a publication is calculated by dividing the number of citations received in a year by the total number of articles published in that year.

Example: If a source has a total of 50 articles published in 2006 and the source receives 50 citations during that year, the journal citation trend for a source would be 1.

The trend line for a source is listed on the y-axis of the graph and the publication year is listed on the x-axis.
